Why refund guarantees matter
A money-back guarantee turns hosting from a gamble into a trial. It's your test-drive window: sign up, run a real site (or our speed tests), and leave free if the host disappoints. The differences between hosts are huge:
| Host | Guarantee | Note | | --- | --- | --- | | A2 Hosting | Anytime | Prorated refund at any point — the strongest in the industry | | DreamHost | 97 days | Over 3 months to test | | HostGator | 45 days | Above-average | | Hostinger | 30 days | Standard | | SiteGround | 30 days | Standard | | Bluehost | 30 days | Standard | | Kinsta | 30 days | Managed plans | | Cloudways | 3-day trial | Pay-as-you-go, no lock-in |
Read the guarantees in each provider review — and remember the number that matters is what you'd actually experience, which is what our benchmarks measure.
What guarantees usually don't cover
Before you rely on one, know the exclusions:
- Domains — registration fees are typically non-refundable (see domains and hosting)
- Add-ons — SSL upgrades, backups add-ons, email products
- Usage-based costs — overages and overlimit charges
- Setup fees — rare, but check
A $60 domain + hosting bundle refunding $45 after the domain is registered is a real surprise people hit. Read the terms before checkout.
How to claim a refund
- Check the window — note your signup date; most hosts use calendar days
- Cancel in the panel or support ticket — don't just stop paying; that can trigger collections
- Request the refund explicitly — some hosts refund automatically, some don't until you ask
- Watch the timeline — refunds typically process in 5–10 business days
- Back up first — your site files may be deleted at cancellation. Take a backup and move out with the migration guide
The anytime guarantee (A2 Hosting)
A2's anytime money-back is unique: cancel mid-term and get a prorated refund of unused time, no 30-day deadline. It's the low-risk option if you want to try a host without committing — that's one reason it leads our cheap WordPress hosting analysis for cautious buyers.
Use the guarantee as a test window
The best use of a guarantee is a real trial:
- Sign up on the cheapest plan that fits
- Install WordPress and a test theme (install guide)
- Run our benchmark method — TTFB from your region, uptime for a couple of weeks
- If it clears the bar, keep it. If not, refund and migrate to a host that does
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Hostinger refund period? 30 days from purchase. Domains and some add-ons are excluded. Details in the Hostinger review.
Which hosting has the longest money-back guarantee? DreamHost's 97 days, followed by A2's anytime guarantee (prorated at any point) and HostGator's 45 days. Compare all hosts in best WordPress hosting.
Does a money-back guarantee include the domain? No — domain registration fees are almost always non-refundable. Keep your domain at a separate registrar (domains and hosting) so a refund doesn't cost you the domain.
Can I get a refund after the guarantee period? Mostly no, except A2's anytime guarantee (prorated). After the window, the host keeps the fees — which is why the guarantee length matters at signup.
What should I do before canceling hosting for a refund? Take a full backup, move any email elsewhere (see email setup), and confirm the refund terms in writing.
