What "hosting WordPress on Cloudflare" actually means
There are two very different things people mean by this:
- Cloudflare as a CDN/firewall in front of your existing WordPress host — the common case, and free
- Cloudflare Pages / Workers as the actual host — an edge platform that can't run classic PHP WordPress on its own
Cloudflare is famous for 28ms global TTFB and a shockingly generous free tier (see the Cloudflare Pages review), but it's an edge network, not a PHP application host. Classic WordPress needs a PHP + MySQL server; Cloudflare optimizes the delivery of it.
The practical setup: Cloudflare in front of WordPress
The setup nearly every WordPress site should have — free, and takes about 15 minutes:
- Point your domain's nameservers at Cloudflare (free plan)
- Cloudflare proxies your DNS and serves edge-cached static assets (HTML, CSS, JS, images) from 330+ cities
- Enable the free SSL/TLS, Broader caching for static files, and Bot Fight Mode for security
- Keep WordPress itself on any host — Cloudflare sits in front, not behind
The result: your origin TTFB stays the same, but LCP and load time drop dramatically because static assets are served from the edge nearest the visitor. Our speed up WordPress guide covers exactly how to configure this.
What Cloudflare can't do for WordPress
- Run PHP/MySQL — Pages/Workers can't execute WordPress core; you still need a host
- Faster origin TTFB — a CDN doesn't make your server respond faster, only closer
- Replace a host — Cloudflare is delivery + security, not infrastructure
Hosting WordPress on Cloudflare Pages (the headless route)
If you truly want WordPress on Cloudflare's edge, the route is:
- Run WordPress where PHP lives (any host or a small VPS)
- Export the site as static HTML with a plugin (Simply Static, WP2Static)
- Deploy the static export to Cloudflare Pages — free, unlimited bandwidth
You lose dynamic features (logins, comments, search) unless you rebuild them as Workers or use headless approaches. It's a niche but legitimate setup for brochure sites. The Cloudflare Pages review has the platform details.
WordPress + Cloudflare, combined with the right host
The strongest combination is Cloudflare in front of a fast origin:
- Origin: Hostinger (142ms TTFB) or Kinsta (98ms TTFB, Cloudflare edge already built in)
- Edge: Cloudflare free tier — static caching, SSL, DDoS protection
Kinsta actually bundles Cloudflare edge caching, and Cloudways integrates Cloudflare Enterprise via add-on. For budget sites, the free Cloudflare tier on top of Hostinger is unbeatable.
Frequently asked questions
Can I host WordPress on Cloudflare for free? Classic WordPress, no — Cloudflare runs edge delivery, not PHP/MySQL. But you can put the free Cloudflare plan in front of any WordPress host, or deploy a static WordPress export to Cloudflare Pages for free.
Is Cloudflare good for WordPress? Yes — as a CDN and security layer it's the best free add-on for any WordPress site. It cuts LCP/load time and absorbs attacks without touching your origin.
Does Cloudflare speed up WordPress? It speeds up delivery of static assets (images, CSS, JS) from the edge, which improves LCP and load time. It doesn't improve origin TTFB — that's the server's job.
Cloudflare or Cloudflare Pages for WordPress? Cloudflare (the CDN) for classic WordPress. Cloudflare Pages only for static or headless WordPress exports.
What is the best hosting to pair with Cloudflare? Hostinger for budget, Kinsta for premium (Cloudflare edge included). Both have reviews: Hostinger and Kinsta.
